Week 4 — Passiv, Sprachbausteine & Hörverstehen

Phase 1 · Foundation → Phase 2 Review: Day 4 · Day 7 · Day 14 ~60–90 min/day telc Deutsch B2 5 days of structured study
147 Review Principle: Study today → Review on Day 4 → Review on Day 7 → Final review on Day 14. Never skip — this locks grammar into long-term memory.
🎯
Week 4 Goals: (1) Master Vorgangspassiv and Zustandspassiv — the two Passiv forms at B2. (2) Learn the Sprachbausteine exam strategy for both Teil 1 and Teil 2. (3) Build Hörverstehen skills — anticipation, key-word detection, trap avoidance. (4) Learn 30 new vocabulary words: health, environment & science.

1 Grammar — Passiv (Vorgangspassiv & Zustandspassiv)

💡
Why Passiv matters at B2: Passiv appears in all formal and academic texts you will read in Leseverstehen. It also appears in Sprachbausteine gaps, and using it in Schreiben shows you are operating at the right register level. Many learners recognise it passively but cannot produce it — this week changes that.

1a. Vorgangspassiv — the action/process passive Passiv

Formed with werden + Partizip II. Focuses on the action happening — the doer is either unknown, unimportant, or deliberately omitted. The doer (agent), if mentioned, comes with von + Dativ.

Vorgangspassiv — all tenses
TenseFormulaExample (bauen — to build)Translation
Präsenswird / werden + P.IIDas Haus wird gebaut. The house is being built.
Präteritumwurde / wurden + P.IIDas Haus wurde gebaut. The house was built.
Perfektist / sind + P.II + wordenDas Haus ist gebaut worden. The house has been built.
Plusquamperfektwar / waren + P.II + wordenDas Haus war gebaut worden. The house had been built.
Futur Iwird / werden + P.II + werdenDas Haus wird gebaut werden. The house will be built.
K2 (Präsens)würde + P.II + werdenDas Haus würde gebaut werden.The house would be built.
⚠️ Perfekt Passiv trap: In Perfekt Passiv, the Partizip of werden is worden (NOT geworden). geworden is only used in Aktiv: Er ist Arzt geworden.
Vorgangspassiv with modal verbs — very common in B2

Formula: Modal (conjugated) + P.II + werden (infinitive)

ModalExampleTranslation
müssenDas Problem muss gelöst werden. The problem must be solved.
könnenDiese Aufgabe kann erledigt werden. This task can be completed.
sollenDie Kosten sollen gesenkt werden. The costs are supposed to be reduced.
dürfenDas Gerät darf nicht berührt werden. The device must not be touched.
wollenDie Regeln wollen überarbeitet werden. The rules are intended to be revised.
Perfekt with modal: Das Problem hat gelöst werden müssen. — Double infinitive at the end. This form is rare in speech but appears in formal written texts.

1b. Zustandspassiv — the result/state passive Passiv

Formed with sein + Partizip II. Describes the state resulting from a completed action — NOT the action itself. This is the most common confusion at B2.

🔄 Vorgangspassiv — the action

Focus: the process happening

Die Tür wird geschlossen.
The door is being closed. (right now)

Die Tür wurde geschlossen.
The door was closed. (action in past)

✅ Zustandspassiv — the result

Focus: the resulting state

Die Tür ist geschlossen.
The door is closed. (state right now)

Die Tür war geschlossen.
The door was closed. (state in past)

Zustandspassiv — more examples
ZustandspassivTranslation (state)Contrast: Vorgangspassiv
Das Fenster ist geöffnet. The window is open. (state)Das Fenster wird geöffnet.
Der Vertrag ist unterzeichnet. The contract is signed. (state)Der Vertrag wird unterzeichnet.
Die Software ist installiert. The software is installed. (state)Die Software wird installiert.
Das Problem ist gelöst.The problem is solved. (state)Das Problem wird gelöst.
Quick test: Ask yourself — is this describing an action in progress (→ werden) or a resulting condition (→ sein)?
Passiv alternatives — man, lassen sich, sein + zu + Infinitiv

German often avoids Passiv by using these equivalents. They appear in Sprachbausteine and Leseverstehen regularly.

StructureExamplePassive equivalentMeaning
man + AktivMan verkauft das Produkt weltweit.Das Produkt wird weltweit verkauft. The product is sold worldwide.
sich lassen + InfinitivDas lässt sich lösen.Das kann gelöst werden. That can be solved.
sein + zu + InfinitivDas Problem ist zu lösen.Das Problem muss/kann gelöst werden. The problem must/can be solved.
Partizip II as adjectivedas gelöste Problemdas Problem, das gelöst worden istthe solved problem

2 Sprachbausteine — Exam Strategy (Teil 1 & Teil 2)

Sprachbausteine is worth 10% of your total score — 30 points out of 300. It tests grammar in context: choosing the right word form, preposition, or connector. With the right strategy, this is one of the most improvable modules.

📊
Score breakdown: Teil 1 = 10 Multiple-Choice gaps (15 pts) · Teil 2 = 10 matching gaps from a word box (15 pts). Total = 30 pts. You need 60% = 18 pts to pass this module.
Teil 1 — Multiple Choice Gaps: 5-step strategy
1
Read the whole text first (1 min, no filling) — understand the topic and tone. Formal letter? Email? Article? This tells you the register and what grammar structures are likely.
2
Read the sentence with the gap — and the sentence before it. Context almost always extends beyond one sentence. The clause before the gap often determines the connector or preposition needed.
3
Try to predict the answer before looking at the options. Ask: what grammatical structure is missing? A conjunction? A preposition? A verb form? A pronoun? Predicting first protects you from being misled by wrong-looking correct answers.
4
Eliminate wrong options by grammar rule. Check: Does this option require a specific case (Dativ/Akkusativ)? Does this conjunction require verb-final position? Is the verb separable or inseparable? Wrong options often violate grammar rules.
5
Check meaning last. Among grammatically valid options, meaning decides. Pick the one that fits the topic and logic of the text. Never guess randomly — even if unsure, eliminate first.
Time budget: Teil 1 = max 12 minutes. Do not spend more than 90 seconds on any single gap. Mark your best guess and move on.
Teil 2 — Word box matching: strategy

You receive 15 words/phrases and must choose 10 to fill 10 gaps. Five are distractors. The text is usually a semi-formal or formal letter/email.

1
Read the word box first. Note which words are: nouns (gender?), verbs (separable? infinitive?), connectors, prepositions, pronouns. Sort them mentally into categories.
2
Read the full text without filling. Understand the overall message and structure. Where is the Einleitung? The main body? The Schluss?
3
Fill the easiest gaps first — the ones where only one word from the box fits grammatically. Cross out used words immediately to shrink the pool.
4
For remaining gaps: use collocation knowledge. Some verbs always pair with certain prepositions or nouns. Ask: which word from the box "belongs with" the surrounding words?
5
Never leave a gap empty. Use process of elimination — if 4 gaps remain and only 5 words in the box are left, try each one in each gap and see what fits. Cross out any that cause grammar violations.
What Sprachbausteine actually tests — category breakdown
CategoryWhat is testedExample gap type
PrepositionsFixed prepositions with verbs or adjectives; case after prepositionsich freuen auf / über · warten auf · bestehen aus
ConnectorsSubordinating conjunctions (verb-final) vs coordinating (verb-2nd)obwohl / trotzdem · weil / denn · damit / um zu
Verb formsPassiv, K2, Infinitiv with/without zu, separable verb formswird durchgeführt · anzurufen · würde empfehlen
PronounsRelative pronouns; da-/wo-compounds; reflexive pronounsworüber / darüber · womit / damit
Adjective endingsAdjective declension after definite/indefinite article or without articleein wichtiger Aspekt · das neue System
Register phrasesFormal collocations and fixed expressionsim Voraus · in Bezug auf · zur Verfügung stehen
Common Sprachbausteine traps & how to avoid them
TrapExampleSolution
obwohl vs. trotzdemObwohl er krank war, … (verb final) | Trotzdem kam er. (verb 2nd)obwohl = Konjunktion → Nebensatz. trotzdem = Adverb → Hauptsatz.
weil vs. dennWeil es regnet, … (verb final) | Denn es regnet. (verb 2nd)Same meaning — different word order. The surrounding syntax tells you which fits.
damit vs. um zuDamit er es versteht… (different subjects) | Um … zu verstehen (same subject)Different subject → damit. Same subject → um … zu.
seit vs. vorSeit drei Jahren (still ongoing) | Vor drei Jahren (completed past point)seit + Präsens = still happening now. vor = fixed past moment, used with Perfekt/Präteritum.
Dativ/Akkusativ after two-way prepositionsin dem / in den Büro (static) | (movement)in + Dativ = where (static). in + Akkusativ = where to (movement). Check verb type.

3 Hörverstehen — Exam Strategy (All 3 Parts)

Hörverstehen is worth 25% of your total score — 75 points. You hear each text once in Teil 1 and twice in Teil 2 and Teil 3. All tasks are Richtig/Falsch. You must develop listening strategy, not just vocabulary.

⚠️
Critical rule: The statements you are given are paraphrases of what the speaker says — they will NEVER use the exact same words. You must match meaning, not match sounds.
Before listening — preparation phase (the most important habit)
StepWhat to doWhy it helps
Step 1Read ALL statements before the recording startsYou know what information to listen for — selective attention
Step 2Underline the KEY WORD in each statementOne word per statement anchors your listening. Don't try to remember the full sentence.
Step 3Predict: what kind of information would confirm or deny each statement? You listen ACTIVELY, not passively — your brain primes for the right signals
Step 4Note the topic/context from the Aufgabe headerKnowing it is a radio interview vs. a lecture vs. a conversation changes listening mode
Teil 1 (Globalverstehen, 5 Richtig/Falsch) — strategy

One dialogue or monologue. 5 statements. You hear it once. Focus on the overall message and attitude — not every single word.

TipDetail
Listen for attitude signalsWords like leider, zum Glück, eigentlich, aber, trotzdem signal whether the speaker is positive, negative, or contradicting themselves.
Statements match the order of the textIn Teil 1, statements usually appear in the same order as the audio. This lets you track progress.
Mark R/F during listening, not afterYou only hear it once — decide immediately when you hear relevant content. Do not wait until the end.
If unsure: mark FalschStatistically, more Richtig answers exist — but if you genuinely cannot confirm something, Falsch is safer than guessing.
Teil 2 (Detailverstehen, 10 Richtig/Falsch) — strategy

A longer text — often a radio feature, interview, or discussion. 10 statements. You hear it twice. Focus on specific facts, numbers, names, and comparisons.

TipDetail
First listen: mark confident answers onlyDon't linger — mark R/F only when certain. Leave unclear ones blank.
Second listen: focus on blanks and uncertain answersYou now know the text structure — go directly to the relevant sections for unresolved statements.
Numbers and comparisons are common trapsThe speaker might say 30% but the statement says 50%. Or: "more than half" vs. "the majority". Train your ear for quantity words.
Watch for scope wordsalle, keine, immer, nie, meistens, manchmal — a statement saying "always" is Falsch if the speaker says "usually".
Teil 3 (Selektives Verstehen, 5 Richtig/Falsch) — strategy

5 short monologues or dialogues. You hear each twice. Each has one Richtig/Falsch statement. Very fast — usually 30–60 seconds each.

TipDetail
The key information comes quicklyOften in the first or second sentence. If you miss it: wait for the second listening — don't panic.
Read the statement before each mini-clipYou have a pause between clips — use it to read the next statement.
Only one piece of information matters per clipThe statement tests one specific fact — ignore everything else in the clip.
False-friend words & paraphrase patterns in Hörverstehen

The statements paraphrase the audio. Train yourself to recognise these common paraphrase patterns:

Audio says...Statement says...
