Week 3 — Schreiben Mastery & Relativsätze

Phase 1 · Foundation Review: Day 4 · Day 7 · Day 14 ~60–90 min/day telc Deutsch B2 5 days of structured study
147 Review Principle: After studying each section, review it on Day 4, then again on Day 7, and a final time on Day 14. Do NOT skip reviews — this is what locks material into long-term memory.
🎯
Week 3 Goals: (1) Master the telc B2 Schreiben task types (formal letter, email, Notiz). (2) Learn Relativsätze — including dative & genitive forms. (3) Study 30 new vocabulary words: society, work & opinion. (4) Practice one complete Schreiben under timed conditions.

1 Schreiben — Exam Format & What Gets Marked

The Schreiben module is 45 minutes and worth up to 30 points. You must write ONE text responding to a given situation. Understanding exactly how it is marked is the fastest way to gain points.

📋
The 3 marking criteria — each worth up to 10 points:
1. Inhalt (Content) — Did you address ALL bullet points? Did you stay on topic?
2. Kommunikative Gestaltung (Communication) — Is the text well structured? Is the register appropriate (formal/informal)?
3. Formale Richtigkeit (Accuracy) — Grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence variety.
The 4 Schreiben task types you may face
TypeWhat it isRegisterLengthKey features
1. Formeller BriefOfficial letter: Beschwerde (complaint), Anfrage (enquiry), Bewerbung (application)Formal150–200 wordsSehr geehrte/r… · Mit freundlichen Grüßen
2. E-MailEmail to a colleague, company, or institution responding to a prompt with bullet pointsSemi-formal / formal150–200 wordsBetreff required · clear Einleitung/Schluss
3. Notiz / NachrichtInternal note for a colleague summarising info from another messageInformal / semi-formal60–100 wordsNo Anrede required · bullet-style fine
4. Kommentar / LeserbriefOpinion piece responding to an article or statement — give your view with argumentsFormal / neutral150–200 wordsClear position + 2–3 arguments + conclusion
Exam tip: Always read the Situation AND Aufgabe before writing. Bullet points in the Aufgabe are the exact sections your text must cover — missing even one costs you Inhalt points.
Schreiben — The 5-Step Writing Process (timed practice)
  1. Read & plan (3 min): Read the Situation and Aufgabe carefully. Underline all bullet points. Note whether you need a formal or informal register.
  2. Outline (3 min): On your scratch paper, write 1 phrase per bullet point — just keywords. Decide the order.
  3. Write (30 min): Write your Einleitung (2–3 sentences), then one paragraph per bullet point, then Schluss (2–3 sentences). Use a variety of sentence structures — mix simple and complex.
  4. Check grammar (5 min): Focus on: verb position in Nebensatz, adjective endings, K2 forms (if used), Akkusativ/Dativ objects.
  5. Check register + format (4 min): Does the Anrede match the person? Is the Betreff present (for email)? Is the closing formula appropriate?
Time budget: 3 + 3 + 30 + 5 + 4 = 45 minutes exactly. Never skip steps 4 and 5.

3 Grammar — Relativsätze (Relative Clauses)

Relativsätze are a Nebensatz (subordinate clause). The verb goes to the END. They are introduced by a Relativpronomen whose gender and case depend on the noun they refer back to.

⚠️
The #1 mistake: Using the wrong case for the Relativpronomen. The case is determined by the role the pronoun plays in the relative clause — NOT by the gender or case of the noun in the main clause.
Relativpronomen table — all cases
CaseMaskulinumNeutrumFemininumPlural
Nominativ (subject)derdasdiedie
Akkusativ (direct object)dendasdiedie
Dativ (indirect object)demdemderdenen
Genitiv (possession)dessendessenderenderen
Memory trick for Dativ plural: Only Dativ plural is different from the definite article — denen (not den). All other forms match the definite article exactly.
Relativsätze — case analysis with examples
Case usedWhy that case?Example sentenceTranslation
Nominativ Pronoun is the SUBJECT of the relative clause Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Chef. The man who is standing there is my boss.
Akkusativ Pronoun is the DIRECT OBJECT in the relative clause Das Buch, das ich gelesen habe, war sehr gut. The book that I read was very good.
Akkusativ (mask.) Maskulinum Akkusativ → den Der Kollege, den ich angerufen habe, hat nicht geantwortet. The colleague whom I called did not answer.
Dativ Pronoun is INDIRECT OBJECT or after Dativ-preposition Die Frau, der ich geholfen habe, ist sehr dankbar. The woman whom I helped is very grateful.
Dativ (mit Präposition) Preposition governs Dativ → pronoun after it is Dativ Das ist die Stadt, in der ich aufgewachsen bin. That is the city in which I grew up.
Genitiv Pronoun shows possession — replaces sein/ihr Der Student, dessen Referat sehr gut war, hat eine 1 bekommen. The student whose presentation was very good got a top grade.
Genitiv (fem.) Femininum Genitiv → deren Die Firma, deren Produkte weltweit bekannt sind, wurde gegründet. The company whose products are known worldwide was founded.
Dativ Plural Plural Dativ → always denen Die Mitarbeiter, denen ich vertraue, bleiben im Unternehmen. The employees whom I trust are staying in the company.
Relativsatz with preposition — was & wo-compounds

When the antecedent (the word being described) is a whole clause, an indefinite pronoun (alles, nichts, etwas, das), or when no person is referred to, use was instead of a form of der/die/das.

SituationUseExample
Antecedent = whole clausewasEr hat die Prüfung bestanden, was mich sehr gefreut hat.
Antecedent = alles/nichts/etwaswasDas ist alles, was ich weiß.
Antecedent = das (neuter summary)wasDas Einzige, was ich brauche, ist Zeit.
Preposition + thing/conceptwo(r) + Präp.Das ist das Thema, worüber wir gesprochen haben.
Tip: wo(r) + Präposition is used when the antecedent is a thing/idea. For people, always use Präposition + Relativpronomen: der Mensch, mit dem ich gesprochen habe (NOT womit).
